Obvious signs of die back, dead branches in the canopy of the tree. In spring and summer, look for branches that are leafless when other branches have green growth or buds. In autumn look for branches that have clinging dead leaves while other branches have shed their leaves and are bare. Branches that are smooth and without bark may be dead and that is why it has not regrown a new layer of bark. Look for bracket fungi that grow out from the sides of the trunk. They live on dead or rotten wood so that’s a sign that your tree is in an alarming state.
Bracket fungi grow on dead and rotting wood and are a sign that your tree needs attention. 90% of tree problems are caused in the roots or by root damage. If there has been excavation work near a tree that is going through changes, it may be due to that excavation. Trees are slow to react and start to die so that excavation work could have been up to ten years ago. Even minor excavation work can affect trees close to the boundary such as laying new services, fibre, water upgrades.
